Staying motivated with your health and fitness goals

Now that the year is under way, how do you stick to your wellness resolutions?

With the silly season finally over, it is time to get back to reality but the switch back into work mode can derail your new year health and fitness goals. So how do you stay motivated?

Here are some tips that will make all the difference to your willpower:

Keep a journal

Tracking your progress in writing can help you stay on track. Jot down how well you have done each day and make plans for the future. Set yourself small goals and devise strategies to help you reach them.

If you’re not the paper and pen type, try an online fitness log. Apps like Strava can be a great motivator as you can compare your workouts to those of other people.  (Best Running Apps review)

Get it over with

Many of us are procrastinators when it comes to exercise – in fact there’s a saying “Starting is what stops most people.”

If this is you, schedule your workout for first thing in the morning and face the rest of the day knowing you have already achieved something. Aiming for an early session means that if you do get side tracked there will still be time in the day to squeeze in some exercise.

Have a mantra

Mantras are simple but can be very helpful when you come up against cravings or are just having one of those days.

Some simple phrases to repeat to yourself include:

  • I eat what nourishes me
  • I strive for progress, not perfection
  • What I am is up to me

Be creative in the kitchen


Invest in a delicious new recipe book with healthy recipes that inspire you to get cooking. Invite your friends over to try your new dishes and help you come up with even more ideas that will have you looking forward to dinner time.

Raise funds while you run

Make your weight loss count for someone other than yourself. Commit to a charity and ask your friends to contribute towards your efforts with a donation each time you hit a milestone. Remind yourself of the good work you’re doing for others every time you put your running shoes on.

Enjoy yourself!

Being well doesn’t have to mean being boring! Take advantage of the Summer months to get active outdoors. Try stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking or even give surfing a go!

Do something you enjoy and enlist the help of some buddies to join in with the good times.
